What causes potholes in Oklahoma City?

A pothole starts with water. Small cracks let rain reach the base under the asphalt. When the weather swings above and below freezing, that water freezes, expands and pushes the surface up. When it thaws, it leaves a void. Then traffic pounds on the weakened spot until chunks break loose.

Central Oklahoma gives this process plenty of fuel. Winters often swing across the freezing line. Spring brings heavy rain and hail. Red clay under the pavement swells and shrinks, which softens the base. A pothole that looks small on top is often much bigger underneath, which is why a shovel of loose material rarely lasts.

What does proper asphalt patching involve?

A lasting patch is a small repair done the right way.

  1. Mark a square or rectangle around the damage, including the weak pavement around the hole.
  2. Saw cut or cut out the failed asphalt and remove it.
  3. Check the base. Wet or soft material is dug out and replaced.
  4. Add and compact new stone base where needed.
  5. Place hot asphalt in layers and compact each one with a roller or plate compactor.
  6. Seal the edges so water cannot sneak in.

The square cuts give the patch clean edges to bond to. This is very different from temporary cold patch, which is dropped in a hole and often washes out. If an entire lot is failing, a mill and overlay may be cheaper in the long run than patch after patch.

Should I patch, seal or replace?

Patching suits damage that is limited to certain spots, on pavement that is otherwise firm. When many potholes appear across a driveway or lot, the base may be failing, and we will tell you so. In that case a patch buys time but does not solve the problem.

If the surface is sound and only has narrow cracks, crack filling and sealcoating can stop potholes before they start. If you are looking at a driveway where most of the surface is broken, our driveway paving page covers replacement. We walk the site with you, show what we see and put the recommended repair in the written quote.

Patching is priced after we see the damage. These things matter most:

  • Number and size of the patches.
  • How deep the failure goes and whether the base needs replacing.
  • Whether the area is a driveway, a parking lot or a private road.
  • Access for trucks and compaction equipment.
  • Traffic control and working hours.

Most patching takes a few hours to a day. Larger programs are done in phases. Wet ground can delay a start, because patching in standing water does not hold. We tell you ahead of time what the schedule looks like and when vehicles can drive on the repair.

What should I expect on the day, and when should I call?

The crew arrives with a saw, a truck of hot asphalt and compaction equipment. They mark and cut the area, remove the old material, repair the base and place the new asphalt. You will see a dark, clean square where the hole used to be. Keep traffic off until we say it has cooled.

Call when a pothole appears, when a patched spot fails again, when you see cracks linking together or when water collects in one spot. Do not wait for winter, since freezing weather makes small defects worse fast. We work across Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore and Midwest City. Start with the short form on any page or return to our home page to see everything we do.

Questions about paving in Oklahoma City

Why do potholes keep coming back after a quick fill?

A quick fill leaves the weak pavement and wet base in place, so water gets back in and the patch breaks loose. A proper repair cuts back to firm pavement, fixes the base and compacts new asphalt in layers. That takes longer, but the repair holds up far better.

Is cold patch ever the right choice?

As a short term fix in winter, when hot asphalt is hard to get or place, it can be. Cold mix does not bond or compact like hot mix and often washes out. We can place cold patch to make a hazard safe and come back for a proper repair when the weather allows.

How long does a patch last?

There is no fixed number. A patch cut to firm base, compacted and sealed at the edges can last a long time, but drainage, traffic and the surrounding pavement all matter. A patch in a surface that is failing everywhere will not outlast the surface around it.

Can you patch in cold or wet weather?

Wet ground and standing water cause patches to fail, so we wait for dry conditions where we can. Hot mix also cools fast in cold air, so very cold days limit what works. For an urgent hazard, we use a temporary cold patch and return for the lasting repair.

Who repairs potholes on a street or shared lot?

Public streets are repaired by the city, and you can report them to the city. Private driveways, shared lots, apartment roads and HOA roads belong to the owner or the association, and those are the jobs we take on. If you are not sure who owns a road, ask your property manager.
